This article seeks to contribute to the debate on the international dimensions of democratization, through an examination of the role of the Usa as a democracy-promoter. Having illustrated the main themes which characterise the theoretical debate on the influence of international variables on the transformation of political regimes, the central part of the article is dedicated to an analysis of the pro-democratic aims of United States’ foreign policy and, especially, to an examination of the efficacy and legitimacy of Us interventions, which, via the use of the armed force, attempt to impose democratic rule in independent, sovereign, third countries. The article concludes that the exogenous factors of democratization are relevant, yes, but never conclusive unless accompanied by development of equal force and direction within those target-countries which are subject to international intervention.
