The present longitudinal study is aimed to verify the predictive power of different variables that compose the emergent literacy construct in preschool age on writing texts abilities in 1st grade of primary school. We examined emergent literacy skills in 115 children in kindergarten and their textual abilities in 1st grade. The Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) carried out on emergent literacy variables showed three factorial dimensions: phonological competence, orthographic competence and textual competence. Regression analyses showed a significant prediction just of oral textual competence in preschool age on textual writing ability in 1st grade. This research contributes to enrich knowledge on processes involved in the transition from emergent to formal literacy in the perspective of prevention and reduction of risk in advanced writing abilities.
