This paper focuses on some aspects of error and approximation notions in pure and applied mathematics. After examining the error made by a human computer, the paper analyses the approximation theory in real analysis. The relations between real numbers and classes of rational numbers defining them (Dedekind-cuts), the theory of series (numerical and of functions), and their utilization in approximated evaluations testify to the importance of the error-theory in mathematical analysis. In physics these notions are applied to the measure of a quantity and to the determination of the function representing the law of a phenomenon.
