Objectives Regional economists have been studying the industrial districts for several decades, because of their surprising performance in terms of innovation and growth. In recent years, important changes are taking place, like internationalization and groupification. Rivista di Economia e Statistica del Territorio, n. 1, 2007 This paper, taking into consideration these new phenomena affecting the economic system and particularly the districts, aims at analysing the actual features of the district firms, wondering if there are still significant differences between these firms and the extra-district firms, or not. Methods and Results The empirical analysis, consisting of descriptive statistics and a Tobit model, is run on a sample of 1200 manufacturing firms settled in Lombardy, with the aim of highlighting the differences between district and non-district firms with regard to some key variables (i.e. commercial and productive internationalisation, groupification). Conclusions The competitive advantage of districts seems to survive only with regard to commercial internationalisation.
