The main hypothesis of the present article is that the psychotherapeutic process unfolds through a recursive trend, characterized by leaps of higher integration (insight), which are often preceded by phases of instability in therapeutic relationship (test), marked by mild relapses. To support this hypothesis, the author proposes an integration between Control-Mastery Theory and Multi-Motivational Theory of human behavior, which is the standing point of Cognitive-Evolutionary perspective. The integration presented appears coherent with the data emerging from the neuropsychological research on changes in emotion regulation. In the second part of the article, the main phases of a psychotherapy, lasted almost three years, are showed as an exemplification of the progressive coordination among different interpersonal motivational systems along the theraputic process. Key Words: Cognitive-Evolutionary Therapy; Control-Mastery Theory; Multi-Motivational Theory; Therapeutic Process.
