Crisis and meaning of the italian law 180: an open challenge - The article deals with the urge to enhance the basic inspiring principles of the Italian bill on psychiatry passed in 1979. Such principles dealt with the recognition of the fundamental social nature of the individual, and, as such, of the patient. 30 years later, the Italian public health system has undergone deep changes, due to the return to reductionist paradigms, based on a biological, nosographic and biological interpretation of the patient. At the same time there has been an increase of illnesses, such as depression, panic attacks, or eating disorders, which are quite relevant on an epidemiological scale, together with an increasing transformation of the Italian society towards a more multicultural nature. Both these two groups of factors call for a re-definition of the inspiring principles of the psychiatric law towards a more ethno-psychiatric and ethno-psychological frame. At the same time, these principles need to involve not only the public system, but the private practioners as well.
