European civil war - Enzo Traverso’s recent book (A ferro e fuoco. La guerra civile europea) has renewed the debate on the controversial usage of an interpretative category - the European Civil War - much discussed in the historiography. Roberto Bianchi, Claudio Pavone and Gabriele Ranzato present three critical readings of the periodization, definitions and theses of a book that reopens reflection on one of the most discussed and studied periods of contemporary history: the interpretations and legacies of the two World Wars, the relationship between history and memory, the political use and abuse of the past, and the controversial construction of a shared memory through the European Union.

Keywords: Civil War, First World War, Second World War, totalitarianism, violence.
