Composite Infrastructure Indicators: Comparing Construction and Weighting Methods Objectives The aim of the present paper is to define and verify some statistical approaches that the authors have introduced in previous works in order to construct composite indicators. We intend, specifically, to carry out an empirical comparison among different synthesis approaches, by testing the robustness and reliability of the results. Such empirical tests have been conducted on the infrastructural endowment (the land transport category) available for a territorial disaggregated level (Italian "provinces"). Methods and Results Three different synthesis approaches are being compared: each of them involves a different weights scheme for the synthesis of the individual indicators, which is based on the variability of the individual indicators. The three methodologies are the following ones: Wroclaw Taxonomic Method, Variability Penalty Method and Benefit of the Doubt Method. This comparison, carried out through sensitivity and robustness analysis of the obtained ranking, shows a considerable convergence of the results. Conclusions The main result is that the Italian infrastructural geography, deduced from the comparison of the different approaches, is statistically robust. On the other hand, it confirms, on average, an unbalanced infrastructural endowment configuration, which weighs against many South regions and some North-East Provinces.
