Generation/generations. The historiographic use of a "stretchable" notion deals with the concept of generation and its use in historiography. She explores the semantic dimension of "generation", its theoretical basis and the notion’s fortune in the social sciences, especially in historiography, underlining "1968" as a crucial moment in the historical success of "generation". Emphasizing the discrepancy between the concept of generation as an analytical tool, and generations as historical actors and the object of historiographic study, the survey reflects upon some concrete uses of "generation" and the heuristic potential of the idea of "historical generations" for the study of Italian contemporary history.
