Through the analysis of the results of the "Inchiesta Correnti", effected between 1880 and 1889, the author examines the issue of public charity in Italy during the late XIX century, linked with the wider problem of local government. In the first part of the essay the author describes and explaines the composition and structure of the properties of Opere pie; the second part considers some aspects of their inner organization. The last part examines the relationships between local authorities (Province and Comuni) and the Opere pie: the author underlines the failure of the Deputazioni proviciali in carrying out their duty of guardianship, and the close involvement of Municipalities in the administration of the Opere pie.
Keywords: Centralization, local authorities, charitable organizations, Inchiesta Correnti, charities.
