In the last ten years the Italian Parliament has passed many laws establishing "memorial days". The State is apparently haunted by the need of governing the past. Hence an overflowing official memory, favouring more oblivion than recollection. Italy shares this particular climate with other European countries, since the implosion of official memory seems to be a common feature of the 20th century national States. The weakening of national sovereignty in front both of globalization and ethnic localisms has brought considerable changes, which the crisis of the Italian political system has further emphasized. A new official memory is being built in the transition to the so-called "Second Republic". The parliamentary debates about the memorial laws show a conception of the past which is both instrumental and faint.
