The areas affected by "rurban" settlement processes are experiencing a period of special critical interest. In the first part of this article some considerations are formulated as to the necessarily plural nature of this theme. In the second part, which is monographic, the inhabited countryside is explored by analysing the case offered by the new city plan for Jesi (Ancona). In the final paragraph, looking at the issues of the contemporary "territory project", some aspects of the more general relevance both of the topic and the case are underlined.
