This paper presents the results of a recent analysis of the mountain municipalities of the Piedmont region, based on a multicriteria methodology simultaneously considering socioeconomic, environmental and physical/infrastructural variables. The results highlight a complex typology of mountain areas that challenge the stereotypical image of center-periphery. Taking into account that a territory representation is linked with a specific development interpretation, the analysis in the paper is a useful tool for policy design and to valorize differences in mountain areas and the "praise of normality".
