The paper reports the results of a rhetorical analysis of all the articles concerning biomedical and bioethical issues published in 2008 in five Italian newspapers (Corriere della Sera, Repubblica, Avvenire, Libero, Manifesto). What emerges is that layman discussions of bioethics are marked by para-arguments (ad baculum, ad populum, ad personam, ad verecundiam, slippery slope), by confusion among the descriptive and the ethical aspects of the questions, by fallacies due to the adoption of generic terms, and by the presence of new scientific and social expectations. In the pars construens of this paper a model of bioethics divulgation is proposed, which aims at stimulating autonomous decisional processes in readers, based on solid scientific and ethical knowledge.
