Among the most characteristic traits of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy are the absence of any connecting theme, the evident improvisation in the organization of most of the events, and the reticence of a substantial part of the ruling class in acknowledging the historical centrality of the event. The static condition of Italy over the past twenty years, the continuous growth of the North-South regional divide, and the climate of widespread demoralization that has undermined recovery have accentuated a crisis of the national State, rendered all the more fragile by the uncertainties deriving from the attack on constitutional principles and the pressure of separatist forces. In such a situation, it is ever more important but very problematic how to relaunch studies that do justice to the important interpretative advances of recent years on the composition and reception of the national discourse.
