During the First World War, many French intellectuals and scientists performed their patriotic duty by criticizing, in a number of books, articles and pamphlets, what they considered a typical distortion of Darwinism by the Germans. Darwinism, they claimed, had been perverted into a justification of war and the use of force in the relations among nations. But the Frenchmen’s criticisms disclose many misunderstandings of Darwin’s views and rejection of some of the basic tenets of his theory of natural selection. This may partly be explained by the fact that they favoured a Lamarckian, rather than Darwinian, view of evolution. Moreover, their orientation was also influenced by ideological factors.
