Emidio Spinelli e Francesco Verde, This paper presents a significant section of a larger, unpublished series of lectures held by Hans Jonas during his teaching period in Canada (1950-1954). The main topic is the philosophical, psychological and political role of fear, analyzed both in the Epicurean tradition (with special reference to Lucretius) and Hobbes. Besides his fine interpretation of the basic features of that complex phenomenon, Jonas adds some critical observations on the unilateral attitude of modern and contemporary dualistic or materialistic-monistic systems, in line with his new and original proposal "toward a philosophical biology".
