In this study, the author aims to provide a contribution to tracing the genesis of Wolff’s concept of psychometrics and show the groundbreaking importance of his intuition. It was first formulated by Robert Greene, an eccentric British philosopher, physicist and mathematician, towards the end of the 17th century and theorized anew in Wolff’s psychology in 18th-century Germany. The author carries out her investigation along three main lines: a) the distinction made by Wolff between empirical and rational psychology, both intended as sciences; b) Wolff’s conception of psychometrics; and c) the philosophical and scientific milieu in which this concept was spawned - a context which to date has still not been acknowledged in any secondary bibliography.
Keywords: Psychometrics, empirical psychology, rational psychology, soul, science of the soul
