Data resolution and geographical scale: statistical methods for spatial analysis. The case of Rome Objectives The paper deals with an attempt to classify a territory in a few number of clusters (according to a set of socioeconomic and demographic indicators), at different levels of spatial resolution. Methods and Results After locating a suitable "battery" of indicators and defining the scale of resolution of the data (key problem in this kind of analysis), through an exploratory analysis of the whole Italian territory original results have been reached using an automatic method to segment the main clusters in some others, better informative. To understand if our proposal is reproducible at smaller scales, the same procedure was applied to the case of Rome. Conclusions Statistical results can supply a very effective spatial resolution, at different geographical scales. The application to a smaller scale has confirmed the robustness and validity of the proposed path of analysis, also highlighting significant deviations in respect of a more "ordinary" classification of the Roman territory.
