Following the model of Diogenes Laertius’ Lives of the Philosophers, Jacob Brucker gives space in his Historia critica philosophiae to the reports on the death of both ancient and modern philosophers. The outcome is a sort of catalogue, in which scholarly curiosity is mingled with apologetic concerns (Brucker was after all an evangelical minister) and with the critical spirit of Frühaufklärung.
Keywords: Death of philosophers, historiography of philosophy, Frühaufklärung, Lutheran apologetics, Leibniz, Bayle
