Michael Taussig is one of the most original and provocative representatives of the so-called "postmodern ethnography". His writings have been influenced by the Frankfurt School critical theory and, particularly, by the Walter Benjamin‟s "micrology" perspective. This paper examines some of the issues that are central in the theoretical contribution of this anthropologist from the Eighties to the first half of the Nineties. Three intertwined issues, which I summarize in three keywords, are analyzed: fetishism, violence and state. The article highlights how Taussig has developed a theoretical proposal coherent with the idea that anthropology should abandon any pretense of innocence and objectivity, and turn into a form of radical cultural criticism.
Keywords: Walter Benjamin, fetishism, violence, postmodern ethnography
