The topic of this essay is Greek paideia seen through the project of "third humanism", which Werner Jaeger put forward in 1920s Germany, in order to answer the crisis of his time and his country. Educational and intel- lectual commitment is considered by Jaeger, following Plato, the necessary condition to revalorise political experience, in the belief that the crisis of that time is characteristic of the humanistic Bildungstradition. The failure of the Jaegerian project does not prevent us from wondering again about the possibility of a renewed Humanism in the light of the conception of politics as experience of life and of its conflicts.
