To this day, no research has really looked at the form of physical enclosure of the gated communities itself, its complexity and possible extra-architectural significance. The question of a possible differentiation of forms of enclosure in gated communities according to various countries or cultural areas has not been approached either. To contribute to fill this gap, the aim of this paper is to study the mode of enclosure of the gated communities in China through empirical field surveys around various cities (Beijing, Shanghai). This paper shows that the mode of enclosure of Chinese gated communities is specific; it appears more "soft" than "hard" unlike countries like the U.S. or South Africa.
