The spiritual, cultural and political journey of Ernesto Balducci can hardly be understood in its basic meaning without considering the theme of his roots from a biographical and existential point of view. It is in fact in the ‘enchanted mountain’ Amiata, a land of miners suspended between misery and poverty, that the sources of his inspiration can be found. Balducci’s is a typical ‘border-thought’ constructed in the name of loyalty to the ‘Gospel axis’ and, simultaneously, a radical instance of secularism. In the age of globalization and interdependence of human destiny Balducci’s hope-principle, grateful of the utopian philosophy of Ernst Bloch and with strong similarities with settings such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s and Simone Weil’s, takes a global connotation, in which the memories of the global village’s ancient dream of justice and freedom merge with the inedited aspirations of global civilization.
