The authors stress the importance of urban environment, that is seen in its ecosystem dimension in relation to the quality of life and the well being of population. The analysis is based on a survey undertook in Milan in 2010, thanks to which has been possible to evaluate the weight of some determinants of well being, e.g. income, gender, cultural consumption, and residential spatial distance from green areas. The results show, through the ranking of the most important variables that constitute individual well being, the function of every possible recorded determinant, with particular attention to the role of green areas in building networks of relations and social capital.
