One of the variety of perspectives adopted when studying how law relates to language is the analysis of the parallel development of legal reality and verbal expression, which can take the form either of their extrinsic analogical proximity or of their structural and functional affinity. This essay presents a critical and reconstructive viewpoint to portray the most significant contributions offered to this approach, from antiquity to the modern conception of institutionalism, which highlights the intrinsic historical and social character of both law and language.
