In his recent book, Das Recht der Freiheit, Axel Honneth proposes a critical interpretation of neocapitalism. It would be the result of a pathological evolution of a phenomenon in itself normal, and even positive: the predominance of market mechanisms in production and work. For Honneth, market is not only economically efficient; it also allows the emergence of original, irreplaceable forms of intersubjective recognition. However, these forms can easily be corrupted when the relationship between the exchange partners becomes too unbalanced. This is what characterizes neocapitalism according to the philosopher. The article offers a critical assessment of this historical interpretation.
