This paper presents some introductory reflections on a topic almost unexplored by historians of modern Italy: assistance to the elderly in recent times. It focusses on Brescia and its territory and highlights the results of some inquiries carried out by the Cen- tral Institute of Statistics (Istat) on old people’s homes. These include information about the history of such institutions, their geographical distribution, financial situation, staff and numbers of inmates.
