The essay traces the process of erosion of the walls of Brescia, between 1802 and 1927, which gradually led to their almost total dismantling. The dynamics of this process, from the requests of demolition to the way in which the resulting areas were reused, is traced by analyzing the evolution of the city in economic and social terms, which, together with the loss of physical and symbolic functions of the defensive system, transformed the walls into a barrier to urban expansion.
