The article analyzes the impact of the crisis on consumption in Italy between 2006 and 2011 in order to understand it increases the social risks or it can also be an opportunity to rethink lifestyles in a more ethical and eco-friendly sense. The data show a long stagnation, which doesn’t seem to be revitalized by the growing use of credit. The crisis deepens the old vulnerability of the South, as the area of the country with the worst performance, and affects the expenses "related to projects" (housing, for example), so the most significant products of the made in Italy, from ‘furniture to textiles to our automotive industry, backward in the internal market. The crisis affects the use of organic or fair trade products but less than other categories of goods, but promotes also new ways of purchasing, such as buying groups and the web.
