The interpersonal world of the infant (1985) was a successful book because Stern described and analyzed infant research data in a complete and articulated way. Today, in 2013, i.e. 28 years after the book’s publication, we cannot but be critical of Stern’s thinking. In fact we should no longer talk of a sense of self - emerging sense of self, nuclear sense of self, subjective sense of self, verbal sense of self - but only and exclusively of subject-ego. In this framework of evolving ideas we can talk of a subject-ego and state that the subject-ego is one because it unites diversity with unity, parts with the whole. A subject ego has a number of interacting parts that should be seen in their interaction and interdependence both at the epigenetic and the phenomenological level. A subject-ego relates to the exterior and is not estranged from the interactive reality where it happens to be.
Keywords: Infant research, sense of self, subject ego, multiple selves, self-organization, eco-organization
