Several studies based on analysis of accidents have shown that the "human factor" is the cause of two-thirds of accidents, but they do not consider the organizational context. Unsafe behaviors, instead, have three causal mechanisms: risk perception, risk propensity and safety climate. This paper presents a review of psychosocial studies about these factors and describes three projects focused on the promotion of safe behaviors; they demonstrate the interdependence of these factors and how, by acting on one, it is possible to create proper preconditions to change the other ones.
