The article deals with the attitude of the French press towards the events occurring in Italy in 1977. On the one hand the essay proposes a reconstruction of the social and political dynamics of Italy, initially represented as a bewildered country; on the other it analyses how this early negative image was later on reconsidered by the French press, who began to praise Italy's capacity to deal with terrorism and public order emergency. French newspapers and periodicals are selected for their circulation, relevance and political orientation.
