The "Catholic question" has always belonged to the theoretical and political knowledge, worked out by the Italian Communist Party. However, in the wake of Gramsci’s thought and under the impulse of the Popular Fronts rich season, it reached gradually a more and more marked centrality, till it became, at the moment of the national political life revival, one of Togliatti’s "New Party" basis and a founding element of the rising Italian democracy. The article, based on largely unpublished sources, points out the development of this topic inside the Italian Communist world, outlining its continuities and interruptions.
Keywords: Catholic question in the PCI, Catholics, Communists, Catholic Church, Communist Party.
