Over the years, banks have only monitored economic performance, but recently they have focused on other strategic and managerial spheres, due to market changing and more aggressive and dynamic competitive environment. They have recognized the need to hold complex tools to measure performance, able to capture the overall value generated by the bank. Among others, the most appropriate tool is the Balanced Scorecard (BSC), because it is suitable to read the performance according to a value-based approach. It has been in use in the major banks and it's starting to spread in the local banks, as well. In the specific Italian context, the Cooperative Banks (BCC) are taking the first steps toward the testing of models consistent with their own typical structural characteristics. This work aims to define a possible methodological approach for the implementation of the BSC within this type of banks. This research is supported by a practical application of the proposed approach and by the comparison with a model in use in the German cooperative banks.
Keywords: Value-based approach, Balanced Scorecard, Local Banks.
