The author offers some reflections on various aspects of the Napoleonic Italian historiography: chronology, territorial reorganization, administration, the birth of a new ruling class, and so on. The written and chartographic contributions to the Atlas describe the period as a true watershed in Italian history. The better to understand this, one should put it in perspective by the adoption of a long chronology (1750 to 1820).
Keywords: Italy; Napoleonic age; territory; administration; cities.
