This essay analyzes the Italian legislation regarding health and safety of workers involved in contract and subcontract networks. After having considered the legal health and safety duties, the rules regarding the joint liability of contractors and businesses further up the supply chain for damages suffered by injured workers are illustrated. This analysis shows that in recent decades the Italian legal system has tended to widen the responsibility of the businesses higher up in the supply chain. This seem to be a reaction of the legal system to the tendency of firms to divide themselves into multiple legal entities, operating within the same workplace.
