In this essay, the author retraces, in the light of a nearly unpublished documentation, the relations between historic Republicans and fascist Republicans from October 1943 to April 1944. The narration of these events, described so far only in a short essay in 1977 by Aroldo Benini, the son of Ermanno, who was personally involved in the matter, is extremely important to understand the organizational difficulties faced by the Italian Republican Party in the aftermath of September 8, 1943. The author shows how the dialogue sought by fascist Republicans, initially directed to the circles of Lombard republicanism, eventually ended up involving some of the major party leaders like Giovanni Conti and Cipriano Facchinetti. The Secretary of the Fascist Republican Party, Alessandro Pavolini, considered the support of historical Republicans as necessary to the very legitimacy of the Italian Social Republic. Thanks to his emissary, Giovanni Battista Poncy Casalini, he tried to open a negotiation based on some of the fundamental common values of Republicanism: Anti-monarchism and the cult of Mazzini. Only in April 1944, the Italian Republican Party decided to break up the dialogue with Fascist Republicans.
