Italy is one of the European countries where union membership has been highest during recent years. This strength, however, has been challenged by difficulties in representing workers at the margins of the labour market, especially young professional and economically dependent self-employed workers. Despite their growing number these hybrid workers have access to very limited welfare benefits, whether public or contractual. In this regard, if long term established trade unions have begun to dedicate increasing resources to organizing these new groups of underrepresented workers, it is not only in the union field that new forms of representation are rising. In fact one of the increasing changes in Italy regards the emergence of new autonomous organizations and networks for young professionals and atypical workers who are tending to claim new welfare rights and explore new forms of self-repesentation. The aim of this paper is to analyse some of these autonomous organisations, by considering both the forms and strategies of representation promoted.
