Carlo Capra’s comment focuses first on the opening essay by Christof Dipper, Die Mailänder Aufklärung und der Reformstaat, which criticises the dominant view of the Habsburg reforming age, substantially endorsed by the authority of Franco Venturi, and underlines the novelty of the approach of younger historians, such as Capra, Mozzarelli and others. It then goes on to discuss the notion of Ågradical enlightenmentÅh as applied to Italy by Giuseppe Ricuperati and Jonathan Israel, and points to the danger of an indiscriminate extension of the concept.
Keywords: Eighteenth century Lombardy, radical enlightenment, reform.
