The present paper proposes a bibliographic overview on the Great War in Italy during the period of ‘mobilization’. It examines topics related to the Italian territory, aimed at stimulating and helping the development of new lines of research. The author underlines the lack of studies which deeply and broadly analyse the relationship between the conflict and the transformation of the Italian territory. The Great War, in fact, as it involved enormous quantities of resources, represented the starting point of Italian industrialization; in addition to this, it had far-reaching consequences on the life and territory, assuming the nature of a ‘total war’. The first topic of the overview deals with studies and research which report on the efforts and debates on the part of intellectuals in Europe to preserve European heritage from the consequences of the war. In Italy, in particular, it corresponded to the first, general laws and development on the field of heritage protection, since the unification of the country. The second topic of the overview deals with several publications on the defence system along the Austro-Italian front. It includes studies on fortifications and fieldworks, such as trenches, mesh fences, cable ways, etc, and takes into account historical and technical studies, research in the field of restoration, protection and valorisation, but also a great quantity of publications with touristic and educational aims, such as guides, diaries and travel itineraries. The third topic deals with mobilization in the rest of the country, collecting studies on the new, reinforced transport network, based on the railway, and the great industrial, economic and technological progress of the country, taking into account the conditions of people and lands in that period
