Heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali’s worldwide fame resulted not only from his extraordinary accomplishments in the ring but also from his unconventional social activism, public fight against racial discrimination, forthright commitment to black separatism, and blunt criticism of the Vietnam War. The article outlines Ali’s role as a spokesperson and resonance box for the radical wing of the African-American community, highlighting a few contradictions and a subsequent switch to a less extremist stance that eventually enabled the whole U.S. society to identify itself with him.
