Our paper originates from a literature review carried out around the concept of innovation capability. However, it is not a review but an attempt to argue around the different sources that nurture the innovation capability of the firm. The model we propose in the paper is internally divided into four dimensions (Explore; Organize; Manage; Exploit) each containing three capabilities of the firm. The aim of our paper it is not to provide the reader with a comprehensive review of the innovation capability concept, but to understand how such a capability is nurtured by other capabilities within the firm. Hence no extemporaneous and non-systematic approach to innovation is possible if the aim of the firm is to build a long-lasting competitive advantage based on its innovation capability.
