Between 1968 and 1977 the writer Leonardo Sciascia and the director Elio Pe-tri created some of their most intricate and disputed works. Among these, Todo modo is the best example of their political conception of art. It appears as a politi-cal text, despite its different versions, and as the expression of a widespread politi-cal and cultural mood ‒ not only in the “new left” ‒ reflecting the need for a radi-cal change and the opposition to Republican institutions and to the party who em-bodied them in the aftermath of the Second World War: the Christian Democracy.
