This essay reconstructs the objectives and strategies of the great powers that met in Vienna through the analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the new international order, and the result of an ongoing dialogue/compromise between the goals of expansion and conservation of the participants to the negotiations. The analysis of the forms of diplomatic cooperation in 1815 is accompanied by a constant reflection on the current system of international relations, allowing a useful comparison between past and present.

Keywords: Diplomacy, Restoration, balance of power, geopolitics, international order.
