This essay analyzes the leadership of Queen Maria Carolina of Bourbon and particularly focuses on her personal "parallel" foreign policy initiatives during the «English decade». Through the use of a wide unpublished archival documentation, it has been possible to debunk the "black legend" of a sovereign who is considered crazy, reactionary and drugged with opium, and to fairly reconstruct the complexity of a historical figure with great political depth, the bearer of a clear vision of the "Italian question" in the changed European context.
Keywords: Bourbons, Europe, Italian Question, foreign policy, Napoleonic era.
