Reporting my experience as deputy mayor for urban planning in the City of Milan I tool the opportunity to reflect about urban planning, territorial governance and the role of a politician who is also a planner. The discussion of the role of a technician called to guide planning policies in an important city is analysed in the light of deep changes which have taken place in the governance practices and in the society in general. The issue of continuity and discontinuity with policies carried out by the precedent responsible is dealt with underlying the pragmatic need not to interrupt a series of projects and describing the attempt to introduce some innovations. I also have tried to pursue the objective of establishing new relations with surrounding municipalities for developing collaborative urban projects on the most weak and fragile areas. I hold that reflecting within practices is as important as reflecting on practices
