Urban scholars are recently emphasizing the role of informality in the Global North, but still the fertility of the relationship between formality and informality is far from being metabolized. Properties formerly belonging to mafias, then reconverted to institutional or social uses, are analyzed to test the boundary between formality and informality in the urban region of southern Italy known as the "Land of Fires". The aim is to discuss that, also within a formal measure, such as the national policy for illegal asset reuse, there is a kind of informality that is fertile catching.
