This contribution aims at proposing some consideration from a historical perspective, and at suggesting three possible research paths, starting from the political and cultural context during the elaboration in Italy of the ‘planning standards’ decree (1968). The first one deals with the diffusion of a technical lexicon and with the observation of the emergence and the success of a terminology (‘standard urbanistici’) in the Italian planning culture; the second one focuses on the progressive specialization process of professional cultures in architecture and planning at the end of the ’60s; the third research path deals with the necessity to historicize the ‘bureaucratic shift’ of Italian planning, that could find in the ‘planning standards’ one of the most significant signals.
