‘Ultralight Design Strategies’ is a research project aimed at supporting the design of a network of nodes of local bike paths to connect the peripheral areas resulting from urban sprawl and the denser central parts of the city. These nodes - Sustainable Service Stations for Cyclists (sssc®) - are conceived as micro urban places characterized by specific architectural quality and visibility. They integrate the existing and more centrally located network of bike-sharing stations with more peripheral nodes in the context of the urban sprawl. They are ‘multipurpose’ local stations equipped with the smart city’s digital systems. They provide new opportunities for a more sustainable urban setting where commuters can use the bicycle on their home-work journeys, connecting bike paths with the existing public transport networks such as the regional railway service, subways and buses.
